Introduction to Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is also known as “eyelid surgery,” and can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. If you’re considering eyelid surgery in Medford, you only want to work with the absolute best oculofacial plastic surgeon. Dr. Schiedler is a board-certified eye specialist who attended the top universities and programs, and is the only eye expert you want to trust with your blepharoplasty procedure.

The Benefits of Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery can improve the appearance of droopy eyelids, wrinkles (crow’s feet), and eye bags, but can also help improve vision if eyelid sagginess is interfering with your sight. Blepharoplasty can include the removal of extra skin, fat, and/or muscle from the eye area. Eyelid surgery can be considered a cosmetic procedure or a medical surgery depending on vision impairment, although upper eyelid surgery is the only one that may be considered “medical” and possibly covered by insurance.

Great candidates for blepharoplasty have good ocular health without any eye issues that might be exacerbated with surgery. Procedures can be performed while patients are awake, with mild sedation, or in some cases anesthesia may be used depending on various factors (including patient comfort). In most cases, blepharoplasty is performed in less than 60 minutes. Stitches may be present for about a week, although they are hidden in the eyelid creases with upper eyelid surgery or along the lash line (or even inside the eyelid) with lower eyelid surgery. Some mild swelling and bruising might be present for up to two weeks.

Patients are pleasantly surprised to find that there is little discomfort. A lot of patients return to work one or two days after surgery. Lower eyelid surgery can be a little bit more involved, as there is often more removal or repositioning of fat and skin. This procedure is designed to vanquish lower lid bags, which is a major cause of undereye circles. Sometimes the eye trough needs to be tightened, or dermal fillers in the eye trough may be recommended to achieve optimal results. Upper eyelid surgery requires a recovery period of one to two weeks, while lower eyelid surgery requires two to three weeks.
