Dr. Vivian Schiedler offers skin rejuvenation with Microneedling in her Oasis Eye practice. As we age, our skin loses elasticity, shows fine lines and wrinkles, develops textural irregularities, and becomes dull. Environmental factors such as sun, smoking, and pollutants can also cause premature wrinkles and lines in younger people.
For people who have early signs of skin aging and want to maintain or improve their facial skin quality, there is a great and effective treatment with minimal downtime. Microneedling is a form of collagen induction therapy, which stimulates your skin’s natural healing process.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is an effective skin rejuvenation procedure that has been used in Europe for over a decade. It involves the use of multiple very fine needles that puncture the top to middle layers of the skin. Each tiny puncture causes a very small injury which stimulates collagen and elastin production. These two compounds are the key to healthy, more vibrant looking skin. Over the next 6 to 8 weeks after a treatment, the skin thickens and reduces the appearance of fine lines, crow’s feet, certain acne scars, post-surgical scars, and other skin conditions.
Does Microneedling Hurt?
It is a very well-tolerated in-office procedure. A strong topical numbing cream is applied to the skin first. In most areas being treated for skin rejuvenation, the depth of the needles is very tolerable. For certain scars however, the needle depth should penetrate deeper, up to 2.5 millimeters. In these areas, it may be best to inject the area with lidocaine for some patients.
How Much Downtime is there with Microneedling?
The face will turn red and there will be a fine dot pattern of pinpoint bleeding, which signals the treatment has penetrated to an effective depth. Occasionally there is mild swelling. All symptoms are typically gone by 3 days. Most patients resume using makeup the next day. Dr. Schiedler offers highly effective topical skin care products to speed up your healing and to maximize your results by having the serum penetrate through the tiny channels into the deeper areas of skin where it can have more rejuvenating effects.
Is Microneedling Safe in All Skin Types?
In contrast to laser treatments, Microneedling is safe in all skin types, including patients who cannot avoid sun exposure. Since there is no thermal or heat injury to the skin, there is essentially no risk of pigmentation loss.
How Many Treatment Sessions Will I Need?
Because Microneedling is a gentle and very safe, minimal to almost no downtime procedure, it usually takes 3 to 6 treatments to obtain maximal benefits, depending on the skin condition. It is ideal to do a maintenance treatment every 9 to 12 months in order to stay ahead of collagen loss.
