Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin

Oasis Eye Face and Skin | Ashland, Medford, Grants Pass, Oregon

Plastic surgery can work wonders to rejuvenate your appearance and shave a few years off. However, not every patient considering freshening up their face wants to look younger or is particularly eager to go under-the-knife. Everyone has different needs and wants, and sometimes a little touch-up with an injectable is all it takes. The most common products used to achieve a quick boost are Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin. These three medications are great at refreshing reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Oasis Eye Face and Skin in Ashland, OR, offers a variety of non-surgical aesthetic services to help smooth out your face and give you a younger, more radiant appearance.

What is Botox?

It can be frustrating when friends and family assume you’re sad or mad when in fact you are feeling happy and joyful. The most prominent wrinkles on our face can actually mislead our loved ones to believing we are expressing an emotion when, in reality, we aren’t. These signs of aging are a bit different than other facial lines and wrinkles on your face. These larger, more deep-set lines develop due to muscle overaction from a lifetime of facial expressions and contractions, such as squinting, smiling, and frowning.

Botox is one of the most popular and sought-after cosmetic treatments on the market. It has not only been proven to be safe and effective, but it also has excellent long-lasting age-defying results. Botox, along with Dysport and Xeomin, is a neuromodulator comprised of a form of botulinum toxin that is used to relax targeted facial muscles. It does this by inhibiting nerve signals, also called neurotransmitters, from reaching the muscle. This loss of “communication” prevents the muscles from contracting, leading to a decrease in the prevalence of these wrinkles. By temporarily weakening these muscles, your face is able to relax and create a softer, more rested appearance.

Botox’s safety record goes back to the 1970s, when it was first used in ophthalmology to relax tight eye muscles in people with crossed eyes (aka strabismus). By the 1990s, it was being used for cosmetic purposes to soften wrinkles and frown lines on the face, finally becoming FDA approved for cosmetic use in 2002.

How Are Dysport and Xeomin Different from Botox?

Although all three injectable medications are neuromodulators made up of botulinum toxin, each has a different formulation. This allows them to have individual characteristics that set them apart from each other.

Dysport contains smaller molecules than Botox, which allows it to diffuse and spread to a broader area once injected. This makes it ideal for treating larger areas of the face and achieving a more airbrushed appearance. Dysport can also be a good alternative for individuals who have stopped responding to Botox.

Xeomin is often referred to as a “naked injectable.” This nickname derives from only containing the botulinum toxin. This pure-form neurotoxin is less likely to cause an adverse reaction or result in the body resisting it.  Xeomin works very well and in a very similar fashion to Botox.

Despite having different formulations, all three facial injectables are successful at reducing facial wrinkles, frown lines, and crow’s feet. The result is a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Planning your Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin Treatment

Although it is safe to use these neurotoxins to prevent excessive muscle activity in the face, there is a degree of precaution that must be taken. The face has many muscles that work in concert with one another, and the area around the eyes is delicate. Knowledge of facial anatomy is imperative when injecting Botox or any other type of facial injectable, as injecting them too close to the wrong muscles can have unwanted effects. Relying on an expert surgeon professional such as Dr. Vivian Schiedler to apply these injections is not only a good idea, but it prevents your face from looking frozen, unnatural, or odd.

The first thing you will want to do if you’re considering Botox, Dysport or Xeomin, is to schedule a consultation with board-certified oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Vivian Schiedler. She and her skilled staff will help you determine which injectable is right for you. Oasis Eye Face and Skin is here to answer any questions you may have. Dr. Schiedler will listen to your concerns and only recommend the best treatment option so that you achieve the natural results you desire. Using her expertise in facial anatomy and customizing your treatment to your face in particular, she will help you obtain a soft natural refreshed look, rather than a “done” or “Botox-ed” look.

It is always a good idea to have your injections performed by a certified and licensed physician. That is why Dr. Schiedler insists on performing all Botox and dermal filler injections herself. She considers this artistic and does not delegate these procedures. Dr. Schiedler’s extensive training and expertise around the eye and face allows her to know exactly where to inject to maximize the results of the treatment. She understands that the muscles of the face act in unison and that it is crucial to know where you are injecting so that you can get a natural result.

The Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin Procedure

The most significant benefit of facial injectables, such as Botox, is that they are wholly non-surgical and can be performed in-office. Treatments are quick and painless, letting patients return to their regularly scheduled day right after the treatment. Dr. Schiedler recommends no alcohol, heavy exercise, hot tubs, saunas, or massages for the first 24 hours after your injections. Following these instructions prevents the injectable from spreading from the target area into unwanted areas.

Initial results can be seen in as little as a few days, but maximal results usually take 7 to 14 days. The wrinkle-reducing effects will vary depending on the individual, the injectable used, and the area treated. Results from Botox and Xeomin typically last 3 to 4 months, but Dysport can last up to 6 months, which is why follow-up appointments will be needed to maintain your wrinkle-free complexion.
